Youngstown YMCA Neptunes

Swim Team

Welcome

Welcome to the Youngstown Neptunes Swim Team.  We swim at the Youngstown YMCA Central, 17 N. Champion St.,
Youngstown, OH 44503  PH:  (330) 744-8411

November 16,2009

Congrats to our 12 swimmers who attended the Ashtabula Aloha Invitational, Sunday. Gina Ungaro set a new 9-10 50 yard free pool record there. And because of superior swimming, we came home with the third place trophy over-all!

Also, from last week’s meet at Green…Congrats to the 13-14 and 9 & 10 girls 200 yard medley relays for qualifying for Zones, and to Mikayla Morrow for obtaining her 13-14 100 yard breaststroke Zone time. Kudos also to Gina Ungaro for setting a new team record in the 9-10 girls 200 yard freestyle and for earning a Zone time in that event as well as in the 9-10 girls 50 yard breaststroke. Keep up the great work, everyone!

Third meet news – our next dual meet is this Saturday, November 21 at our pool against Lake County Central. We warm-up at 11:30 am --Lake County Central warms up at NOON; the meet starts at 12:30 p.m. Be at our pool by noon. Parents – be sure to sign-up to work on the Neptune Info board, and be sure to sign-up to say what you will bring for our concession stand. If you can not attend this meet, you should have signed-off either via email or at the pool on the sign-off sheet. If you have not, and you will not be attending, email me at suemellish@gmail.com by tonight, Monday, November 16, 2009 so I can do the line-up.  Thanks in advance for everyone’s help.

Team Pictures – should be in this week. Look for the picture box up in the bleachers. Do not take pictures when you are wet! Be sure to dry off before looking for your photos.

Practices – There is way too much talking going on at practice. You will be asked to sit-out practice if you are told to stop talking more than once. I know you are all friends, and you enjoy seeing each other, but it is impossible to talk over 50 kids’ voices. It is disrespectful and rude to not press your lips together when a coach begins explaining the next set. If you can not be quiet, expect to be dismissed for the day.

Also, our 9 & 10 practices (6:30 to 7:30 p.m.) are way too crowded. If you are 11 and older and come at this time, expect to be taken to the shallow pool to swim as this is not really your practice time. I would greatly appreciate it if swimmers who are 11 and older come to their 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. time on Monday and Wednesday – and at their 6:00 p.m practice time on Tuesday and Thursday. It is hard for the 10 and Unders to practice if older swimmers are taking up their lanes. Also, 8 & Under swimmers – please try to attend, maybe one time a week, the 4:30 to 5:30 practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There is plenty of room at these practices – enough that we can have two separate practices running – one advanced and one for beginners.

Our Team Photographer, Mary Lou Mikolay has been snapping many photos around the pool.  Please click through on these links to view photos of the Youngstown Neptunes.  Thank you Mary Lou.

King Neptune Challenge

Attention All Neptune Swimmers from Coach Sue...

It's smack-down time. Time to see what you're made of. Time to put purpose in your practice.

Time for the King Neptune Challenge!!

What is the King Neptune Challenge you ask? Let me tell ya...

Any swimmer who swims every dual meet event offered for their age group over the course of the Neptune swim season will have conquered the King Neptune Challenge. The events swum can be done at Neptune dual meets, YMCA invitationals or USA meets. You must finish each event and not be disqualified. So if the breaststroke kick is daunting, better get it legal. If the 100 fly seems impossible, better focus on that stroke in practice.

Everyone is automatically pre-entered into the King Neptune Challenge, but who will succeed?

REQUIREMENTS

*  8 & Unders must swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and do the 50 yard freestyle.

*  9 & 10s and 11 & 12s must swim 50 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly as well as a 200 free, 100 free and 100 IM (individual medley).

*  13 & 14 and 15 & Over swimmers must swim a 50 of freestyle, a 100 of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, as well as a 200 freestyle, 200 IM, and 500 freestyle.

All swimmers who complete the King Neptune Challenge will win a cool King Neptune Challenge pin to put on their swim bag; warm-up jacket; high schoolers - put the pin on your swim letter.

The Pin is the award.

***High school swimmers, please turn in your times and events to Coach Sue when you swim at high school meets to meet the eligibility requirements for this award.  Thank you.
